We start tests when windless weather is established. We begin with the difficult arrival combining in itself several consecutive tests, so it is possible to save time on shift of wheels.
The first and most precision test - rolling resistance assessment.
At first we warm up the car and tires, moving with speed of 120-130 km/h on special roads of polygon. During the movement experts evaluate road-holding ability of Jetta at high speed, make soft evolutions from one strip in another to understand how tires influence behavior of the car. In summertime of ten kilometers, or one cycle, on high speed ring of polygon of AVTOVAZ grabs eyes to warm up tires and all units of the test car, to evaluate his behavior at high speed and to put down preliminary estimates for the noise level and smoothness of the course.
The best controllability of Jetta at high speed is provided by tires Pirelli: on them the car ideally holds the set direction, without demanding adjustment, and shows very accurate reactions at the slightest turns of wheel. At the same time the dense, poured by weight steering wheel with excellent informational content allows even to understand blindly on the increasing effort on wheel as far as you turn wheel and as strongly the car leaves aside. Fairly deserved nine points we give such mark extremely seldom!
Belshina was the most uncertain in this exercise at Jetta indistinct "zero" was right there formed, there was empty wheel, rovings on the road have begun. At correction of the direction delays in reactions, big turning angles of wheel and unpleasant taxiing of rear axle in turns - any minute will break in drift. Usually very soft winter tires give such effect.
Tires are heated-up it is a high time to start fuel usage measurements which we carry out on the two kilometer horizontal and direct site of the speedway. Three-four double "runnings" in opposite directions, and at us appear the first results. Through each several sets of tires we check again those tires which appointed basic, at change of air temperature and asphalt by two or three degrees it is necessary to do arrival on basic tires through each three test tires and if temperature changes by four-five degrees through everyone two. It is necessary for the subsequent correction of the received measurements. And at the end of the day we define final results by recalculation received taking into account changes in data of periodic measurements of "oven" (that is in the results shown on basic tires).
Most economic there were GT Radial, Matador and Nokian with them at Jetta expense at city and country limits of speed the most modest. Slightly more faintly Jetta on Triangle tires looks this model competes with the leading three only at 60 km/h, and at "country" speed concedes 0,1 l / 100 to km.
Behind all - Cordiant: it loses to leaders two "tens" on one hundred at country limit of speed, and four - at city. Of course, the difference insignificant, but it is.
Now we move to the northwest sector of polygon, to the special road with cracks and hollows. We carry out arrivals at speeds from 30 to 90 km/h to evaluate as smoothness of the course and internal noise change.
Results are quite natural: wide low profile tires owing to design features - as a rule, noisy and rigid. Therefore six participants "have made a noise" only on six points, and five have earned on seven. (Assessment "norm") only Nokian (for low level of noise) and Goodyear have received eight points (for smoothness of the course).
Tires GT Radial were the most rigid - impressive pushes and strong vibrations from road roughness’s run on body floor, seats and governing bodies. And it is the only tires on which at Jetta the upholstery of salon rattled.
Before replacement of set of wheels drivers move down from asphalt on loose primer. Here, on 12 percent rise, starting and moving with different extent of slipping, experts evaluate efficiency of draft in the different modes. This information is useful to those who on the way to giving have country road piece. Results do not go to final offset - we give them only for the reference.
Most surely row on soil raising of the tire Cordiant, Matador, Hankook and Pirelli - all have received seven points. And more other Goodyear, GT Radial and Toyo slip - experts have delivered them five points. Given rise cannot fly to creep!
Assessment of brake properties is connected with the increased wear of tires. Despite existence of ABS, at hard braking front edges of checkers are slightly rounded. For this reason at first we brake on wet asphalt where the coefficient of coupling is lower, and therefore tires "spoil" less, then we repeat the test on dry. But procedures both on that and on other covering are similar.
At first "we smooth out" the braking strip clamped by cones, having made 15-20 braking on not test tires, we remove dust and small stones on which the car can "slip" from trajectory. And already then we carry out from six to eight braking on test set, every time carefully cooling braking mechanisms long single circle.
Speed of the beginning of braking on wet asphalt makes 80 km/h, on dry - 100 km/h (these are standard "landmarks" in all tire tests). We finish measurement when speed falls to 5 km/h as works at the smaller speed of ABS incorrectly - automatic equipment not always manages to unfreeze wheels, and the skid, as we know, extends braking distance. The measuring VBOX complex which functions allows to record braking length with high accuracy, being based on the data of the GPS and GLONASS satellites. The main thing that over the head there was clear sky.
On braking of Pirelli beats all that is called in one gate and on the wet road, and on dry. On wet Nokian asphalt repeats its indicator, but on dry concedes slightly more than a meter, being rolled away on the fourth position. On dry land the second result with lag from the leader on 0,4 meters at Goodyear tires. It is remarkable that by results both "dry", and "wet" braking in the first four the same tires have gathered - Hankook has joined three above-mentioned.
The longest braking distance on wet asphalt - at tires Matador: they concede to the leader more than four meters. On dry behind all Cordiant, lost to the leader nearly four meters.
It is curious that on dry covering the difference between participants is slightly more than 10%. On wet the gap is more essential - over 15%. Wet asphalt is stumbling block by search of compromise by producers between result and expenses (development and production of mixes, cost of components).
It was necessary to check how examinees treat extreme maneuvering. On our roads it is extremely important and differently as to go round holes? The key to success fast reactions to turns of wheel, stability and mutual understanding between the driver and the car. The maneuver "rerate" or "single change of strip" helps to simulate such situation to us.
We carry out the shortest (and, respectively, slow) from the former exercises according to controllability of the car: length of corridor in which it is necessary to be reconstructed makes only 12 meters. There are also 16-, 20-and 24-meter "rerates", but in the shortest tire are most loaded with side forces as maneuver the sharpest, with big turning angles of wheel.
"Rerate" we carry out exercise twice - on wet asphalt and on dry. In both cases the tester does till 15-20 repetitions, consistently increasing speed. As a result we receive the maximum value at which the car remains within entrance corridor, without forcing down landmark. Car speed in output corridor fixes impartial VBOX.
Has shown the highest speed on wet covering of Jetta on tires Pirelli, on dry - on Hankook tires. The most low speed - respectively on tires Matador and Cordiant. The palm on controllability at extreme maneuvering on both coverings belongs to Pirelli. Experts have awarded these tires of nine points. And on the wet road, and on dry these tires fill steering-wheel with informative effort, and Jetta pleases with accurate reactions, reliable and clear behavior even at very sharp actions by wheel.
The greatest difficulties with deduction of the car on the wet road have arisen on tires Cordiant, GT Radial and Matador. Experts have noted delays in reactions, the raised turning angles of steering wheel and low informational content, and also the dangerous deep drift in the second corridor demanding from the driver of the instant parrying actions by wheel.
On dry asphalt it is the most difficult to replace sharply strip on tires Cordiant - the same notes, as on wet, but drift not so deep, though demanding immediate adjustment.
Before summing up the results, we will remind of correction of system of calculation of final points. This year we have lifted ponderability of assessment of brake properties to 500 points (have increased up to 260 points for wet asphalt and to 240 - for dry), having reduced ponderability of maximum speed on rerate. The total score of behavior of the car taking into account road-holding ability, controllability and speed on rerate pulls on 330 points. We consider that now the balance between braking and behavior when maneuvering is more logical.
First place with considerable separation from competitors is won by Pirelli P Zero - the most "sporty" tires capable to give pleasure from driving in any conditions and the modes. If the purse allows, and the faultless comfort is not the maniacal idea, it is the best choice. Interestingly, what will be the updated tire of Pirelli P Zero which enters the market this spring?
On the second position - Nokian Hakka Blue 2. Loses to the winner of the test very little. Concedes the trifle in characteristics, but is a little more economic and more comfortable. And based on the ratio of the price and quality it is better. We recommend to look narrowly.
Having gained the identical number of points and having divided the third and fourth steps of expanded pedestal, the tires Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 and Hankook Ventus S1 evo2 which too have got to category of excellent tires. Notes to both insignificant are very similar one to another the characteristics. The bowl of scales at the choice can shake in favor of more available Hankook.
Toyo Proxes Sport (889 points and the fifth place), Nordman SZ (882 points) and Dunlop SP Sport FM800 (875 points) have got to category "very good tires". On all indicators, up to comfort, they are very close. But Toyo provides higher road-holding ability and will be suitable for distant trips more, and primer for all tires is admissible in the minimum doses. Based on the ratio of the price and quality of Nordman it is more seductive than the others.
The following three - from discharge "good tires": Belshina Artmotion HP and Triangle Sportex TSH11 which have gained 865 points and divided the eighth or ninth places, and also slightly priotstavshy GT Radial SportActive (847 points). Despite difference in final points, both Chinese tires are similar in "character" as twins. We recommend Belshina tire owing to considerable notes to road-holding ability only for city speeds though it brakes slightly better than "twins" both on dry, and on the wet road. Besides it is a little more comfortable, so is better adapted to uneven roads. "Twins" from China (they have even braking distances both on dry, and on wet asphalt are identical!) will please on distant trips with quite high road-holding ability, but only if roads good - both tires do not shine with smoothness of the course. All three do not favor sharp maneuvering on wet asphalt, and GT Radial does not love it and on dry. However, they have trump in sleeve - they promote fuel saving. Based on the ratio of the price and quality of Belshina and Triangle it is a little more attractive (both just right to the minimum budget).
The last places are held by tires Matador Hectorra 3 (834 points) and Cordiant Sport 3 (826 points). They are slightly dearer than those that have taken higher positions, and at the same time concede to them in opportunities. In asset at the Matador - high fuel efficiency, satisfactory road-holding ability and level of comfort, in passive - the most modest brake properties on the wet road. Cordiant can brag of satisfactory coupling on wet asphalt. Confident movement on primer is provided by both tires.
