Review
In the first day before the controllability test on wet surface it was necessary to wait until from the route remove fallen leaves which though were pleasing to the eye the autumn beauty, did surface of track of even more slippery. Tires of ten models which before all have passed 100-kilometer running in were tested. It is necessary to remove all remains of the greasing substances which have remained after production from protector.
The list of participants had included novelties from Continental, Michelin and Pirelli, the new flagman Vredestein model, and also inexpensive Maxxis, Falken and Toyo. Besides, in tests there were also tires from Hankook, and Dunlop, and also tire of the Goodyear company which celebrated victory in previous test.
After the route was cleared, time to evaluate tires in difficult turns of the route has come, and the right the first Goodyear have acquired to leave for track. Tires of this brand have won the test of last year therefore the honor to become reference tires by means of which experts monitored change of temperature or characteristics of covering of the route has been done them.
After the brilliant performance the Goodyear company could not show the same outstanding result in the last test when front drive Opel Mokka was used. Tires Goodyear have harmonious behavior and get prettier controllability, however this time at them it has not turned out to be compared to leaders in respect of coupling level. Besides, Goodyear had had problems with braking on wet covering, and their average value has made 33,5 meters that it is nearly five meters worse, than at the best tires.
Tires Dunlop from the same producer the similar fate has befallen, and they have too long brake distance too. Maxxis which easily lose coupling on front axle in turns because of what they can be recommended only conditionally for wet roads were one more tires with weak indicators on wet surface. Tires Toyo and Vredestein quickly stop the car, but they lack cross coupling, and Falken, Hankook and Pirelli as a result could earn large number of points.
New Continental have shown in general acceptable results, but It should be noted that they are inclined to understeer, and at them also relatively weak cross coupling and resistance to hydroplaning. Perhaps, it is the price for the low resistance to swing? Before the Continental brand was always guarantee of the maximum coupling on wet covering. Anyway, new Michelin which have the shortest braking distance, high side stability and excellent controllability on wet surface became the best this time. The only lack of Michelin - low resistance to cross hydroplaning.
The whole second day went again rain and as for tests the dry surface was necessary, and it became clear that in Milan of good weather you should not wait for at least a week, has been decided to carry out tests on Circuito Tazio Nuvolari Route - private track near Genoa. By the evening all tires have loaded into the truck and have gone to the South at night that already at eight in the morning the next day to start tests. Though in the foggy morning the surface of track was still too cold, it was necessary to define on what sites tires will be tested and to set up the equipment. After that the pilot whose task was to evaluate and analyze behavior of all tires, and also to show the best time of circle for each of them has come out to the route.
Outstanding qualities have shown this time tires Pirelli which have deserved praise for exact reactions to turns of wheel, high stability and good time of circle. Michelin behave only a little less predictably, but at the same time too keep controllability in any situations. Tires Goodyear have very good controllability on dry covering, and it is obvious that they have been optimized for similar conditions. Besides, harmoniously and predictably tires from Continental, Hankook, Dunlop and Toyo behave.
Vredestein, Falken and Maxxis have shown acceptable controllability on dry track too, however they have reduced comfort of the course and the increased noise level so the number of the points earned by them was lower, than at leaders. Separately It is necessary to tell about Maxxis which publish clearly heard howl - so should not be just owing to what tires have significantly worsened to themselves assessment.
It was necessary to carry out only tests for braking on dry asphalt, however on track of Nuvolari they cannot be carried out. To be returned to Milan? But in the same place the rain, is also not present any hope for improvement of weather. To spend all weekend in Italy too of opportunity was not therefore it has been decided to return meanwhile to Stuttgart and to process the available data that too demands a lot of time.
Next week the Piedmont sky has cleared up, and after eight hours of continuous braking results of the last discipline at last were ready. The best for steel Michelin which Goodyear and Pirelli follow and only tires Toyo have really badly acted.
When summing up it became clear that all test is surely won by new Michelin which possess the balanced characteristics on wet and dry surface, effectively brake in any conditions and provide the high level of safety. Tires Pirelli have impressed with dynamic behavior and accuracy of reactions on dry track, however they have rather weak resistance to hydroplaning and long braking distance on wet covering.
What it is possible to tell about Continental? Results of these tires show that sometimes specialists should go on compromises even from Hanover. The company says that in comparison with Continental ContiSportContact 5 at new tires the resource has been increased, the comfort is improved and that the most significant, rolling resistance is significantly reduced, and as it has become clear in the test, these changes nevertheless have demanded decrease in coupling on wet surface.
Hankook and Falken can help to cut fuel usage, and this ability has allowed them to bypass even the winner of the last test - Goodyear which eventually weak braking efficiency on wet covering has brought. Toyo, Vredestein and Dunlop have received assessment too It "is not recommended", and could make it only tires Maxxis which are not able to satisfy needs of drivers of cars from upper part of average segment.
In all disciplines the winner gets 10 points, and results of the others are calculated depending on difference with the best indicator. Ponderability of the general assessment in tests on wet surface - 50%, on dry surface - 40% and in tests for environmental friendliness - 10%.
