In the last material, we have acquainted you with the results of the test of the winter tires intended for warm winters in the countries of Central Europe.
In this article, the test of tires for more severe winters, characteristics for another part of our country is provided. Among examinees – as the models which are already tested by us in the last tests of tires, and novelties. In total nine models of tires with the different levels of premium have been investigated. And once again we were convinced that the brand directly influences and characteristics of tires, and not just their cost.
About five years ago I was the admirer of spiked tires, but the last winters have shown that it is better to buy good friсtion than tires, commensurable at the price, with cheap thorns which on ice are worse, than good frictional, studded tires.
At winter tires of the Scandinavian type the protector has absolutely other design and is made of very soft rubber mixes. Such rubber and set of lamels (small cuts in protector) do protector very elastic. Therefore reactions to turns of the wheel on such tires are much worse, and the braking distance is more than on summer tires. So on such tires, it is necessary to forget about aggressive driving. Winter tires are less dangerous to soft winters in this sense, but they very much lose Scandinavian in coupling properties on ice-covered roads.
But … Though good winter tires of the Scandinavian type show excellent characteristics on ice-covered roads, it is worth warning concerning driving on asphalt. Especially to drivers who during the periods of thaw, lack of snow and ice on the road think that they can go as by summer tires. It is a big mistake!
The first place was shared among themselves by two tires: Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 and Continental ContiVikingContact 6. But at identical final assessment the Finnish tire has proved to be slightly better on ice, and German – on asphalt. Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2, as well as in last years, has shown excellent coupling properties on ice and snow, excellent consumer characteristics (the provided level of comfort and profitability) though was and some weak points on asphalt are noticeable. Continental ContiVikingContact 6 – the owner of very balanced characteristics. It has shown good properties in the majority of types of tests, as has allowed it to share the first place with Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2.
The place for two leaders in this test was taken at once, perhaps, by the most senior on age (from the moment of the presentation of the model) the bonus tire Michelin X-Ice 3. In my final assessment, it has conceded to two winners only 0,1 points. X-Ice 3 has excellent coupling properties on ice and provides short braking distance and good controllability on dry asphalt.
The tire the medium class of Gislaved Soft Frost 200 who thanks to the balanced characteristics has taken the fourth position in the test has impressed testers. It lagged behind leaders on ice and snow a little but compensated its properties on wet and dry asphalt. As a result, the tire Gislaved Soft Frost 200 and other above-mentioned models have received in safety rating on four maximum stars in this test.
At the end of the list, there was also tire Federal Himalaya ICEO. It possesses very low coupling properties on ice, therefore braking distance very big. And to start, it is necessary to have excellent skills in winter driving.
The Marshal KW31-Izen model became the outsider of this test of tires. Drawing off its protector is very similar to that of the first generation of the tire Nokian Hakkapeliitta R (the first generation of R) had. But, unlike the Finnish tire which possesses excellent coupling properties on ice-covered roads, the Marshal KW31-Izen model on ice – among the worst. It is one more example of that winter tires, however, as well as summer, it is impossible to choose only on features of the tread pattern.
